ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico came in at No. 18 in a ranking of innovative states, nabbing the top spot on a specific measure that looked at research and development. The WalletHub report, released Thursday, gave New Mexico a No. 1 for ratio of total research and development performed in the state to its gross domestic product. Coming in behind New Mexico were, in descending order, Massachusetts, Maryland and California. However, New Mexico was dragged down by other measures. For example, it came in at No. 49 for eighth grade math and science performance, ahead of only Mississippi and Alabama at the bottom.

The No. 1 spot on the overall innovation ranking was District of Columbia, followed by Maryland, Masschusetts, California and Colorado. At the bottom was West Virginia.

Other measures included in the study were highest share of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) professionals, share of technology companies, tax friendliness, research and development spending per capita and entrepreneurial activity.
