Albuquerque, NM – September 5, 2014 STC.UNM, the University of New Mexico’s technology transfer and economic development organization, hosted a special visit from the President of NEDO, Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization and the country’s largest public organization promoting research and development of industrial, energy and environmental technologies. STC CEO Lisa Kuuttila and Dr. Andrea Mammoli, Director of UNM’s Center for Emerging Energy Technologies, welcomed NEDO President Dr. Kenji Kurata to the Aperture Center at Mesa del Sol, the site of UNM’s collaborative smart grid project with NEDO. Also in attendance was Hans Barsun, the facilities engineer in UNM’s Physical Plant Department and a doctoral student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Joining Dr. Kurata on a tour of the smart grid site were Go Takizawa and Kenji Wasada from NEDO’s office in Silicon Valley and Keisuke Okuda from NEDO’s Smart Community Department in Tokyo. The delegation were present to see firsthand how the smart grid facility and ongoing research being conducted by Dr. Mammoli and his team could be commercialized for the global market. NEDO and the Mitsubishi Research Institute are visiting later in the month to work on the details of a future funding grant for expansion of the smart grid project at Mesa del Sol.
“We are very excited to continue our partnership with the innovation leader in global renewable and sustainable energy technologies,” said Ms. Kuuttila. “We believe that Dr. Mammoli and his team at CEET are the ideal partners for NEDO to develop smart grid technologies for the global market. STC and the University of New Mexico were honored to have hosted Dr. Kurata and his delegation.”
