Albuquerque, NM – October 20, 2014 Recent reports in the news centering on a large group of children exposed to tuberculosis (TB) at an El Paso area hospital highlights the need for a fast and accurate way to diagnose TB infection. A University of New Mexico technology invented by Dr. Graham Timmins, Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy, and commercialized by local start-up Avisa Pharma, is being developed to answer that need. The technology is a breath test that can detect TB infection in the lung in 15 minutes and eliminates the need for time-consuming sputum cultures. See local television station KOAT’s story on the technology at http://www.koat.com/news/tb-diagnosis-research/29220032.
