President Frank’s Weekly Perspective – 8.26.2013

Good morning.

Engineering Success

UNM has been an institution of transformation since its founding days, and our Center for High Technology Materials (CHTM) is an exemplary reflection of this spirit of innovation and discovery. CTHM enhances the interaction of the University with the national and federal laboratories and industrial organizations in New Mexico, and encourages the establishment of new industry in our state. Since it was founded by the State of New Mexico as a Center of Technical Excellence in 1983, the CHTM has built an internationally recognized, interdisciplinary program at UNM with over 425 MS/Ph.D. combined degrees awarded, and 199 Ph.D.s. CHTM has issued 134 U.S. patents, which have paved the way for entrepreneurship through a total of 12 spin-offs; has published over 2,000 refereed scientific articles; and has received $188 million in research funding.

After 27 years of outstanding leadership as CHTM director, Distinguished Professor Steven R. J. Brueck is stepping down to devote more time to his research. I am pleased to announce that Professor Sanjay Krishna has been appointed next Director of CHTM. I am confident that, working with the faculty, staff and students, Professor Krishna will extend the CHTM tradition of excellence. In honoring Professor Brueck, CHTM and STC.UNM are inviting the UNM community to a reception on Aug. 29, from 3-5 p.m. at CHTM. Please RSVP at CHTM.
