Dr.  López has disclosed 53 inventions to STC, received 34 UNM-affiliated issued U. S. patents, has one pending patent application, one license agreement with company GPB Scientific, LLC, for his nanostructured devices for separation technology; one license agreement with start-up Eta Diagnostics, Inc., for his multinode parallel flow cytometry technology; one option to license with start-up Pucara Engineering and Logistics, LLC, for his bio-compatible hybrid organic/inorganic gels technology; and one option to license agreement with company ieCrowd for his modular assembly technology.

Dr. López’ nanostructured devices for separation technology is a method to fabricate nanostructured matrices for use in the separation and analysis of a wide range of biological nanostructures, including those in suspension and those associated in planar membrane-based assemblies. This invention enables the manufacture of nanostructured devices for separation based on gradient and affinity. This would be useful for sample preparation, drug discovery and proteomics, rare cell detection, and environmental sensing.

His multinode parallel flow cytometry technology is a parallel analysis system for use in flow cytometers. The system uses multinode acoustic standing waves that focus particles and cells into multiple parallel streams simultaneously with parallel optical detection across the flow streams. Acoustic wave focusing is particularly useful in parallel analysis because it can be used for a wide range of cell and particle sizes in a single device.

His bio-compatible hybrid gels technology is a novel way to immobilize cells, liposomes, enzymes, proteins and planar lipid bilayers in gels. This approach utilizes a gelling process based on vapor phase synthesis. Specimens are exposed for a specific amount of time to differing vapors which form a porous gel that allows substrates and products to enter and leave the system while immobilizing and retaining the subject biological material (cells, enzymes, liposomes, proteins, or planar lipid bilayers) functional, allowing for unlimited, diverse applications such as drug delivery, biosensors and biofuel cells.

Dr. López’ research focuses on bio-interfacial phenomena, biomaterials, self-assembly and bio-analytical microsystems to address problems in medicine, biotechnology and environmental quality.
